Belize

Somes cays in the distance
Somes cays in the distance

We’ve been to Belize twice while cruising and both time we didn’t go to the mainland. You need to book a shore excursion if you want to go ashore or if you want to participate in any activities. Tour operators pick up passengers directly at the ship. The ship isn’t docked so everyone has to use the tender boat service.

The main land is far from the ship, and not very tidy according to other passengers. This description has also been used for the beach according to other passengers. Some said that the sea floor felt like walking in mud and that the water was murky, we’d rather go out on the water.

The first time we went to Belize we were hoping to go scuba diving but the dive operator’s boat broke down so we had to change our excursion at the last minute. Fortunately there was still space left on the snorkeling tour. On our second visit, we did go scuba diving but the experience wasn’t as great as we had expected. The equipment was old and badly maintained and we had a malfunction that caused us to miss a dive (fortunately, no harm came to anyone, but it’s made us check all aspects of any rental equipment more carefully, as should you!).

Even the sealife seemed less abundant from what we remembered. While Cozumel has become a marine sanctuary, this was obviously not the case in Belize, as we saw lobster fishermen right next to our dive site!
