The Lure of the Ocean…

Lately, we’ve been lucky to have the opportunity to go to Miami and South Florida regularly. We love the area and we seem to always have something new to discover. There are always things to do, a new restaurant to try, a new music venue, or a new beach to see. It’s hard to get tired of the ocean, we hope to one day retire to a seaside location and live happily ever after.

The lure of the ocean keeps us going back for scuba diving, an activity we started doing only a few years ago but that we have fallen in love with. Being able to breath underwater and magically float weightlessly is an amazing feeling! Witnessing the beauty of the underwater world has also transformed us into conscientious visitors of this strange place. Some say that scuba diving will transform you into an ambassador for the environment and I can say that it has indeed done so for me. People tend to protect what they love!

Finding rubbish, especially plastic, littered all over the beach or in the ocean really upsets me. I pick it up — I don’t really care if people are staring at me for doing it — I pick it up because I care about our planet and all of its inhabitants. Plastic, even micropieces, can kill marine life. Turtles eat it thinking its jellyfish and can later die because they ingested a man made indigestible and toxic substance.

I just don’t understand people that litter on purpose. Some do it by pure ignorance; others by sheer laziness or just plain old selfishness or inconsideration for others and the environment. I believe that education is an important key to stopping this behavior that destroys the environment and our planet.

Plastic and other rubbish should be disposed of in trash cans or recycling bins and if there aren’t any nearby, bring it home and dispose of it in the proper manner. My wish would be that the next time you see litter, especially plastic, on the beach you pick it up. If we could all do that even once, it will make a difference. It might even save a life!

It’s so sad that people are so inconsiderate and selfish. The mere act of bending down to pickup their own garbage would make a difference. Come on people!
