Exploring Oleta River State Park, Miami

Isn’t it strange how we tend to go out of our way when we’re on vacation, visiting another country or city but we seem to bypass interesting places right next door to where we spend most of our time, at home?

The other day we decided to stop at the Oleta River State Park, which is only 10 minutes from our house. This park is huge and spans 1,043-acre much of which is waterfront on North Biscayne Bay. It’s hard to believe you’re in the middle of the city! We discovered a beautiful white sand beach—the sand is like powdered sugar, a sweet softness under our feet!

The beautiful calm waters make it perfect for those with little ones. This is a really nice place to spend a few hours; our usual beach was often overtaken by tourists. Not here! But do check the water quality before heading out.

For those who prefer to be on the move there are hiking and biking trails. If you prefer water sports, they have kayak and canoe rentals and you can go through the calm waterways between mangroves and under pedestrian bridges.

You are sure to see many species of water birds and maybe even some dolphins or manatees if you are lucky. Last but not least there is of course swimming by the beach in the calm waters with an area cordoned off from boaters and kayakers.

Others go to fish and perhaps grill their catch or whatever they brought along on one of the numerous barbecues. Another plus is that unlike some of the other parks we have frequented, here the BBQs are right on the beach with a great view.

It’s a nice spot to watch the sunset after an afternoon of fun. We plan on making this a regular outing.

Tip: Facilities and change-rooms are available as well as plenty of parking.

Entry fee: $6 per car

Canoes and Kayaks are available for rent by the day or by the hour. They also offer guided Full Moon Kayak Tours and Sunset Tours. Reservations are required.

There’s a concession stand, food trucks and a restaurant serving freshly caught fish within the park as well as camping and cabin rentals.
