Philipsburg, St.Maarten

‪The island of Saint Martin is divided into two territories, the French side and the Dutch side where cruise ships dock. There’s a symbolic border between the two countries. The most noticeable difference is that name change from  Saint-Martin to Sint Maarten.

Many duty-free shops are located only a short walk away from the cruise port. But for high-end  designer boutiques head to Marigot on the French side. In Marigot you’ll also see plenty of cafés and restaurants as well as an open-air market.

Many beaches can be found all around the island. The easiest to get too is Great Bay Beach. It’s within walking distance of the cruise port but it can get crowded.

Other fun things to do include snorkeling or scuba diving, taking a boat tour or island tour or visiting Fort Amsterdam, an old Dutch military base, dating from 1631. The fort is only 2-miles (3 km) from Philipsburg so it’s possible to walk. Car and bike rentals are also available.

Note: In September 2017, Hurricane Irma caused significant damage to the island.
